ISMA pegs sugarcane output at 370 mt

New DelhiIndia’s sugarcane output in the 2010-11 crop marketing season that starts in October is expected to be around 370 million tonne, almost 57 million tonne more than 2009-10. The crop is expected to be sown in around 52.8 lakh hectares, up from 44.5 lakh hectares this year, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in its latest cane acreage estimate for 2010-11. The body estimated that in 2010-11, utilisation of sugarcane by alternate users would be around 85 million tonne, while around 35 million tonne of sugarcane will be used in the form of seed and chewing. The remaining almost 250 million tonne of sugarcane will be made available for producing sugar which at 10.2% recovery should provide almost 25.5 million tonne of sugar in 2010-11, comfortable to meet the country’s annual demand of around 23 million tonne.
